Checkmate COVID was founded by Felix Kaye, Jack Jacobsen, and James Poetzscher, high schoolers in San Francisco interested in chess.
We spent a lot of time playing chess during the coronavirus pandemic and decided that we could try to use our passion for chess to support coronavirus relief. So we held a 32 person chess tournament for our friends in San Francisco and gave the winner $100 of our own money to put towards any COVID-19 relief charity. Seeing that the first tournament was a success, we decided to garner sponsors and donations for more tournaments. With sponsorships, Checkmate Covid was born and charity money increased. Now, we frequently hold chess tournament with up to 64 contestants from all around the country and require that the winner’s prize money be donated to any credible COVID related charity. We hope to raise more money for future tournaments to continue supporting COVID-19 relief in these trying times. Help fight coronavirus through chess!
MEET THE TEAM
Donate to or sponsor Checkmate COVID and help raise money for coronavirus relief. All contributions go to the top three finishers in our checkmate COVID tournaments who then donate the entirety of their winnings to a COVID-19 relief charity of their choice. Beating COVID-19 through Chess!
